The Pearl Harbor Loss

  • Dec. 7, 1941, the era of the US president, Franklin D Roosevelt. That day was a quiet Sunday morning in Pearl Harbor, the families and American soldiers based in Hawaii were enjoying talking and spending their favorite moments together. It was such a very nice day to keep in good memories for them. But at7.55 a.m. Everything turned from forehand to the back of the hand, the bright sunny day in Pearl Harbor did not exist anymore, the sky covered by Japanese planes, the rain of bombs and bullets fell over the families below. From happily talking to running for survival, from smiling luminously to screaming for help. It was the day that changed America’s decision, drawing the United States into World War II.

“I was studying a book about aerial navigation and began to hear sounds of the bombing. It hardly drew my attention. Practice maneuvers were common around the base. But the noise grew louder and louder.” said World War II veteran, Clark Dethem who was 19 years old at that time explained what happened on the day that changed World War II.

The previous Pvt. Clark Dethem said “I ran out of the hanger and I saw aircraft swooping down and dropping black objects, and it still didn’t dawn on me, because I wasn’t expecting anything like that.” No one expected that it was gonna happen, the worst incident in US history.

At 7.55 a.m. local time, the Japanese squadrons started to turn the shining sky into a dark nightmare by dropping the first high-explosive and incendiary bombs caused many fires and damages to the Pacific fleet. And the second strike around 9 a.m. killed at least 350 men at the Hickam Army AirField by one single bomb.

The deck of the battleship USS Arizona blew by 1,800-pound bombs making the ship start to meet the sea. The damage of this battleship was so excessive that it could return to its majesty on the sea, causing more than 1,000 people trapped inside, keeping their breath to survive but still can’t resist the pain and sink to the sea, eventually. Next, the greater USS Oklahoma was burst by the torpedoes with 400 sailors causing the battleship to lose her balance and be drawn to the empty ocean.

The Japanese plan was to destroy the Pacific Fleet, therefore, they destroyed the Hawaiian capital Honolulu, attacking every battleship in Pearl Harbor. Moreover, the Japanese struck the Pacific Island of Guam and Manila, the Capital of the Philippines as well. It was the worst decision that the Japanese army made to fight with America.

On December 8, After the Pearl Harbor attack, the US president, Franklin D Roosevelt declared the war on Japan, while the American citizens were willing to fight in the war because of the loss in Pearl Harbor that was created by the Japanese. And three days later, Japan’s allies Germany and Italy declared war against the United States leading them to be the losers in World War II.
