May I be the first officer to say how our organization was shitty as fuck? I bet I wasn’t the first person to say that though. Everyone knew that it was shit. Earlier I ran so fast to get on the train but I had to stop and stay in line to get out of the building--my office. A hell of an office I’d say, which was also true because, you know, technically we were in hell.
“Busy day, huh?” Kat was standing in a line behind me. She looked at people trying to scan their card to get out of the building. We were kind of strict about office hours and security. I’ve never seen other people or creatures who didn’t get the authority being able to come in the office except, you know, you could if you were in the dead pool.
“Tell me about it. By the way, did you put a coffee cup on my table?” I asked while checking my belonging again, wallet...checked, fake human identity card...checked.
“Yeah, it was a caramel macchiato I got from Starbucks, the cafe that--”
“I know what Starbucks is, Kat. The thing is I knocked the cup by accident and the coffee spilled on my book.”
“WHAT? I thought someone else stole my coffee! It was you!”
“That’s what you got? I didn’t steal it, okay? You put it on my table and I knocked it down. By accident.” I rolled my eyes, stressing the point that the coffee spilling all over my table was not my fault.
“Oh, that’s why your room smells like coffee, and I thought you decided to try the mortal taste of brown drink made from beans. Did you do the cleaning spell? The one that comes with air freshener spell?” I nodded. It wasn’t like we are wizard or those high level officers in heaven who could do serious mojo or anything. We were just workers. The spells we were taught were kind of the one that human could have done by buying stuffs from convenient store like air freshener.
Kat shook her head, resigned with my not-perfect cleaning spill. It wasn’t like I wanted to be a cleaner so why bother? Then she said, “And what did you say about your book?”
“Yeah...my book, the coffee made the words kind of blurry. I couldn’t read the name except the place and time.” I showed her my coffee-stained book. Kat took the book from my hand and skimmed through the books.
“Funny. The only name you cannot read in this book was the last one.” I shrugged, looked at the coffee stained page. The ink was faded and what was left were barely readable, the name of the coffee shop, the time my client would be there (6 o’clock in the morning. Why does anyone wake up that early to go to a coffee shop? Man, It seems like humankind does really need caffeine, If they are that desperate.) and the fading letters that couldn’t be read. The ink might just be appearing the same time I knocked the coffee.
“Now what are you gonna do?” Kat asked when I tapped my card on the scanner and exited the building.
“I don’t know. Go to the human world and see if there’s anyone giving an I’m-going-to-die vibes?”
