Story time was over. I didn’t tell you Kat’s story to make you pity me or hate me. It was just a story. I just wanted you to know the basic of how it happened behind the scenes after death and before birth. It sounded confusing, hundreds years living here and it was still confusing.
I was still sitting at the café, rereading the comic again and again because those magazines were boring, doing nothing was boring.
“You seem like you enjoy that comic a lot.” The guy said behind the counter. I didn’t know how much time had passed since I got the drink from him (just kidding, of fucking course I knew. I looked at my watch every goddamn 10 minutes). I looked up at him, he didn’t look busy at this time of the day considering it was only Death visiting him, reading some comic to kill time and a sleep-deprived college student looked (more) like death sitting at the table near the door.
“I guess. It’s a shame there’s only volume one here. I wish the person who left this comic forgot the whole series here.” As I complaining, the guy just quietly made an ‘Oh’ shaped with his mouth then he said,
“Actually, that book was mine. It’s not a lost and found thing. The series isn’t finished yet but there are five more.”
“What? You’re saying there’s only six of this awesomeness? No way.” I shook my head, wishing for a time travelling spell to go get the comic in the future.
“You can buy and download it on your phone though, just in case you’re too desperate to go to comic store and want to read it right now.”
“Nah, I don’t have a phone.” And I only learned about how phone became like some small magic soap-sized box, you could use it to take photos, talk with people, using those weird blue apps or even tap on the screen to call cabs! Magic be damned! No…just kidding, I still needed magic to wash my dishes.
“What? How do you live then?” The guy seemed shocked, real shocked that I was so concerned that his cause of death would be shocked to death or something, it was a little bit awful. I mean…I saw a lot of death and I bet people didn’t want to tell their friends their loved one was dead from thing like this...actually people didn’t want to tell anyone their loved ones were dead. One girl I knew from soul reaping was died by drunkenly slipping while going to toilet and accidentally smashing her head to a toilet bowl….awful would be an understatement.
“Without phone.” I smirked and the guy just raised his eyebrow.
“Well, I prefer the real book anyway because the screen didn’t do justice to the art.”
“You have the rest of the story?”
“Yup, they’re at my apartment. I’m a faithful fan of the story.”
“Then…can I borrow yours?”
To quote one of my favorite show Game of Thrones, ‘There is only one thing we say to Death: not today’, yes, not today…it was not this guy’s last day yet but it would be, soon.
So…I was going to wait here, enjoying his comics while it lasted. Maybe after the guy was dead I could bring the books back to my place. He wouldn’t remember it anyway.
