Global media industries and the consumer zombies
  • Do you believe that everything you do in your daily life is just based on your own thoughts? We are all brainwashed by the media because we consume a lot of it in our daily lives, including news, education, entertainment, advertising, and the highly influential social media. To be accepted in society, to look beautiful, and to gain a lot of likes or followers on Instagram, We must be willing to follow the capitalists' constantly changing trends.

The goal of capitalism is to foster innovation, which may or may not be necessary for human survival. But, because capitalism wants to sell, it will do whatever it takes to persuade people to desire it. What if they aren't interested? Just make people unable to live without it by using marketing to control how people perceive the world and manipulate our emotions. And this is where “consumer zombie” started.

    Beauty Standard

White skin, big eyes, prominent nose, clear face, chapped lips, smooth armpits, slender legs, ideal beauty that has been conveyed through mainstream media, online media, and advertising media until it becomes a 'beauty standard' that society accepts. While this standard is constantly changing over time, it is a value that has been rebuilt over and over again by focusing on the beauty of only one dimension and overlooking human diversity. Beauty standards are established through many contexts in society. This can be seen from the advertising media that lead people to think there must be a skin color like that, a figure like this, in order to lead the consumption of their own brand's products. Various contests using facial features as a criterion when determining the winner in the final. It is considered a knock to conclude that What should a handsome face look like? And this standard is being supported more and more when certain factors come into play like the growth of the beauty and surgery industry.

All of these are myths that are created against human nature simply because a businessman wants to sell their products. For example, in the 20th century, a man named King Camp Gillette, a razor businessman who made the multi-billion dollar shaving industry by managing people's perceptions. Gillette's advertising made shaving a new and unmistakable part of being a woman. He advertised a razor as the perfect accessory for the metropolitan lady, pushing the idea that a woman's unshaven armpit was 'embarrassing' and 'unfeminine'. These kinds of ads are still used in the present time and it still can manipulate us no matter what.

Including social media trends or challenges that people participate have warped this value even more than before, such as reaching back to touch the navel, whoever touches it indicates that they have a small and beautiful waist. Or competing to put a coin on the collarbone, whoever can place a lot indicates that the collarbone is deep and pronounced. And this myth has built a barrier between truth and fantasy until the new generation's beliefs and confidence are destroyed by inflicting trauma.

When we wake up in the morning, the first thing we do is brush our teeth with a whitening toothbrush, moisturize with a whitening moisturizer, apply a whitening deodorant, and conclude with a voluptuous spray of perfume before heading out the door. All of this was done because we wanted to fit in with a society that felt having acne, armpit hair, and dark complexion was unacceptable. These norms cost a lot of money or sometimes it hurts. Just because some group of people wants to be successful in business without caring that people might get low self-worth.

Many Thais are used to greeting with bad words instead of saying hello like Have you gained weight? Why did you look tan (black)? You should go get braces? Because we were raised to believe that these events were out of the ordinary. Many youngsters have low self-esteem as a result of society's labeling them as ugly, leading to insecurities and a reluctance to socialize. Or, even worse, it could be the start of a depressive episode. So, how can we get rid of these words? Those usual beauties had to be paid for regardless. As a result, you must be either attractive or wealthy. Otherwise you cannot stand in this world.

    Pop culture

The entry of pop culture, whether K-POP or Hollywood, is another important influence that can manipulate people's emotions. Lisa from Blackpink, the K-Pop girl group who got almost 60 million followers on Instagram. She has influences not only on music, but also on beauty, fashion, and lifestyle as well. So, no matter what brand of clothing or accessories she wears, she always gets people's attention, making the products that she wears are out of stock. That’s why people called her ‘QUEEN OF SOLD OUT’. As you can often see the promotion using the keyword "Lisa uses" or another artist's name. Because the name of the artist can easily catch the attention of fans. They will buy products without thinking, regardless of their quality, price, or even their actual needs, they have become the real zombies.

On the Hollywood side, there's Kylie Jenner. As you know, Kylie has her own skincare and cosmetics brands called “Kylieskin” and “kyliecosmetics” she regularly promotes her products through Instagram stories until a “thick lips” became famous since Kylie launched a new matte lipstick.

Many women who want to have the gorgeous and stunning tanned look like Kylie will definitely be wasting their money on Kylie's brand, although many have said that Kylie's skincare and makeup are overpriced and not worth it. But who cares? People just do not want to get out of trend.

Globalization has enabled multicultural exchange. The easier connection in different parts of the world also comes with excessive consumption. Over-consumption only to make those who are already rich (1%) is getting richer, and we are just one of the market slaves (99%) in this cycle.
